As some of you may know, I am the featured poster artist for this years Texas Book Festival.  As part of the festival, renowned Texas Monthly Creative Director, TJ Tucker is moderating a discussion with me this Saturday from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at The Contemporary Austin - Jones Center.

TJ and I have shot 16 covers together over the past 6 years.  We will be discussing my entry into the photographic world, The Amazing Faith of Texas book, our Texas Monthly covers, the ‘making of’ some of my images, and stories both insightful, humorous, and possibly embarrassing.  It’s sure to be fun and entertaining.  Oh, and it’s free!

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM at The Contemporary Austin - Jones Center.

If you’ve ever wondered how the art magic happens, we recommend snagging a seat to this.

“Somebody has to step up,” Wendy Davis observed one evening in late May over drinks at the bar of the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin. “As long as the Democrats continue to buy into the same bullshit that some of the Republicans are saying—‘Oh no, it’s Texas, it’s hopeless’—and continue to act like it won’t happen for six, eight, twelve, sixteen years from now, that perpetuates the problem.” — Sneak peek at our August cover story The Life and Death (and Life?) of the Party, on newsstands next week.

Sup Lance! Here’s one title nobody can strip from ya. Congrats to our newest Bum Steer of the Year.

Halloween is a mere week away gentle readers! Tell us, what are you planning to be for Halloween? This staffer is thinking about going as Phil Collins as Davy Crockett, complete with "Come and take a look at me now" flag,  but I might not perfect my British accent by then. If you’re more a fan of giving out candy, there’s still plenty of time to perfect your pecan pralines skills. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go figure out the piano parts to my theme song.

In honor of National Pancake Day, here is the initial sketch for our December 2011 cover. It only took 8 hours, a dozen pancakes, a few packages of bacon, 4 members of the Art Department, one food stylist, a very nice restaurant staff that let us take over their place for an afternoon and Randal Ford to make this sketch a drool-worthy reality. If you need a place to celebrate, check out our list of 40 best places to grab breakfast. Hope you’re hungry!

One of the best cover sketches we have on file. Imagine the cover meeting! “Just use your imagination a tiny bit to see the finished product.”
